The most important decisions you have to make when making your choice are probably the following:
Which season should the jacket or coat be suitable for?
Alight coatorjacketfor the warm summer months, an ultra-warm and windproofpuffer jacketfor the coldest weeks of winter or for trips to the mountains? An elegantcoatfor winter in the city? Or atransitional jacketfor spring and fall?
What activities would I like to do with the jacket or coat?
If you spend a lot of time outdoors, a windproof and weatherproofoutdoor jacketor afleece jacketis definitely a good choice. If you’re just commuting to work, a nicewool coator alightweight jacketmight be a better fit. And if you ride your bike even when it’s raining, we haverain jacketsorrain ponchos that pack down small and can always be kept in your bag just in case.
Should the jacket have a function?
When it comes to clothing, “functionality” refers to protection from wind and rain. How well arain jacketprotects against moisture is usually indicated by a water column rating. A water column rating of 10,000 mm is considered completely waterproof, but even a rating of 5,000 mm or higher provides good protection against wind and weather.
Do you want to combine the jacket?
Some jackets are designed for layering, i.e. for wearing in layers, combined with another jacket. Softshell jackets are a good example of jackets that can be worn under another jacket or under a coat. They are not water-repellent themselves, but simply keep you warm. If it's not raining, you can wear it as your only jacket; if it is raining, simply put on another jacket or coat over it.
