Sustainable satin bed linen made from organic cotton

In our range of sustainable satin bed linen, you will find comforter covers, pillowcases and fitted sheets in incredibly soft and shiny quality from Storyfabrics and Journey Living. At Storyfabrics you will find beautiful plain colors and at Journey Living various patterns inspired by trips to Italy, Turkey or Portugal. Both brands use certified organic cotton and guarantee production under fair conditions. Satin is not a material name, but a type of weave that makes the fabric particularly soft and shiny. In the past, satin bed linen was traditionally made from silk, but today cotton or synthetic fibers such as polyester or nylon are mainly used for satin bed linen.

Is satin bed linen sustainable?

Satin bed linen is not fundamentally sustainable, it depends very much on the material from which the bed linen is made. With cotton, it is important to pay explicit attention to sustainability or a trustworthy certificate or organic label. The cultivation of conventional cotton is very resource-intensive and harmful to the natural ecosystem and people due to the use of pesticides and monocultures. Synthetic fabrics can now be produced in a very resource-efficient way, for example from recycled PET or nylon. However, the resulting textiles are not biodegradable, microplastics can get into the wastewater during washing and there are usually no recycling options. In short: satin bed linen made from organic cotton is the most sustainable.

What are the properties of satin bed linen?

The satin bed linen that you find in our shop is made from organic cotton. The natural material is breathable and regulates body temperature. The shiny satin fabric often feels a little cooler than regular cotton fabrics, but is suitable for use all year round. Satin fabrics made from synthetic materials may feel pleasantly smooth and silky, but in most cases they are not very breathable. Heat and moisture can build up and lead to an unbalanced sleeping environment. Too much heat can severely disturb your sleep. We always recommend natural fibers for bed linen because they ensure a very pleasant sleeping climate.

How do you wash satin bed linen correctly?

Satin bed linen made of cotton is very easy to care for, but somewhat less robust than linen or hemp bed linen, for example. Journey Living bed linen is pre-washed and should not shrink further during washing. Nevertheless, either way, we recommend selecting a lower wash temperature and a lower spin speed for the first few washes. A washing temperature of 40°C or even 30°C is usually sufficient for bed linen. After one or two washes, it may be 60°C. We also recommend satin bed linen: Do not tumble dry as this can change the shape and color of the fabric. If the bed linen does end up in the tumble dryer, you can select a lower drying temperature. You can also prevent damage to the fabric by not overloading the washing drum and spinning the laundry at a lower speed, for example on a gentle cycle.
